In other words, the Gran Premio Elite is an excellent value proposition on paper. Out on the roads, the ride quality from the steel frame and carbon fork makes crack-laden pavement feel a lot less jarring, and a The Tektro rim brakes are underpowered, but shifting from the Shimano drivetrain is fast and crisp, and that makes the Gran Premio Elite feel more expensive than it is.

The Gran Premio Elite is affordable yet well-equipped because it capitalizes on the strategy of making old stuff good again, starting with the name. Kinesis makes bikes for Diamondback, Felt, GT, and others. All use aluminum frames, carbon forks, and Shimano Claris drivetrains—three steps down the Shimano road hierarchy from the drivetrain on the Motobecane. Cannondale and Trek list weights for their bikes in 56cm frame sizes; both are claimed to weigh roughly the same as our 59cm Gran Premio Elite, which also has a typically heavier steel frame.

The stem, seatpost, and handlebar are aluminum and badged as Motobecane. On the size 59cm bike, the mm stem and mm crank felt appropriately sized. Coupled with relatively short mm chainstays, the Gran Premio Elite has aggressive angles—which is not just amusing for casual cyclists, but also ideal for racers wanting a low-cost winter bike that mimics their long riding position.

The real excitement arrives when you approach an intersection: From 45mph, I needed meters to bring the bike to a halt on bone-dry pavement. That brings us to the final question: Who should buy one? You can always upgrade from a Claris to a drivetrain, for instance, and most racers would probably trade poor vibration damping for a stiffer frame.

But for cyclists who just want an affordable road bike with an exciting ride and excellent shifting from the box, the Gran Premio Elite is without parallel. Bikes and Gear. Type keyword s to search. The successor was the Z46, equipped with modern suspension. As a result, sales decreased. The arrival of cheap, efficient Japanese motorcycles also hurt sales.

They continued to produce two-cylinder cc motorcycles throughout the s.

They also manufactured a small number of two-stroke, three-cylinder cc and cc bikes. For a time in the late s and early s, the company competed in Grand Prix motorcycle racing claiming several victories in the cc class and finishing second in the cc road racing world championship.

Motobecane is known for designing very light weight mountain bicycles. Motobecane was the first French maker to start using Japanese parts, in the late s.

This was a very good move on their part, because at that time Japanese derailleurs and crank sets were much better than the older French designs common on mid-priced speeds. The change was largely due to the influence of their U. Unlike most French makers of the era, Motobecane used Swiss thread bottom brackets for most models.

Later mixte Grand Touring models also used this design. These bikes were made from tubing and this had been "Ovaled" or formed into a tear-drop shape to aid aerodynamics supposedly one of the first bikes designed in a wind tunnel. They included some hidden cabling through the top tube and full use of Shimano's Adamax ax components which had been designed specifically for aerodynamics.

French bicycles before often used French-threaded bottom brackets now difficult to find replacement parts for. French bottom brackets, like Italian ones, used right-hand threading on the fixed cups, making them subject to loosening by precession.

Swiss bottom brackets were identical to French, save that the fixed cups were reverse-threaded like English onesmaking them immune to loosening by precession.

For more information, see bottom bracket specifications. In addition, French headsets are sized and threaded slightly differently from the more common English headset. These vehicles bear no relation to the older French made bicycles, other than the name.

Although the manufacturer was unfamiliar with automobile technology, they were happy to incorporate into the design a form of the innovative infinitely variable transmission which a few years later became a defining feature of DAF cars.

In the event, however, neither passed beyond the prototype stage. Under the name MBKthe company continues to manufacture scooters for the European market. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. I'm just a little suspicious at the cheap price. You mean "Why are they so inexpensive? OK, that's probably not completely fair.

Certainly the frames are adequate, but they're not anything stellar. Don't fall into the trap of beleiving that all frames of a given material are identical in fit, weight, and ride quality. There tends to be good value in the main components, but often the items that get less attention are lower spec. There's not anything inherently wrong with that - the mainline manufacturers do it too on many models.

Mostly, it's just a tight-margin business model with a few layers of distribution costs and subsequent profits shaved out of the channel. You don't have to pay for the shop to help you with selection or fitting, the wrench to assemble and tune the thing, the distributor to provide warranty claims processing, and so on But you also don't get the benefits that those provide to a regular retail setting.

You get to make the call on the importance of those items. A good habit is as hard to break as a bad one. Maybe the frames are produced by people who earn 50 cents an hour. If your opinion differs from mine, Too bad.
